Founded as a non-profit in 2000, we invested three years in developing a method of teaching chess that was worthy of classroom time, easy for teachers to implement, and made learning a wonderful experience for kids. The result was FIRST MOVE. Since 2003 we have had over 1.5 million kids go through the First Move chess program.

First Move began as an in-school program. Being part of the school day was the only way we could reach all kids. After receiving many requests for afterschool clubs, homeschools, and parents, we decided to modify our model so that First Move could be used in all of these ways. The end result is more kids will learn chess, and that is a good thing!
